The layout of the line and the engineering structures built of locally quarried stone mark the apex of the classic era of railway construction. The Bernina Line, completed in 1910, is an innovative adaptation of an overland electric railway with an exceptionally skillful layout in a high alpine landscape. Both railways make the Upper Engadine accessible to international tourism and provide outstanding experiences for travelers.
In addition to the railway, the surrounding cultural landscape, a result of the interaction of humankind with nature, has been included in the list of World Heritage sites. The Albula/Bernina Cultural Landscape is distinguished by important material witnesses to early Christendom, many historic routes, the development of tourism and industrial history – all these left their mark on the landscape. The power plants built by Nicolaus Hartmann in modern times are among the most important in Europe and are closely related to the Bernina Railway. In addition there are important townscapes such as … and valuable individual buildings. The cultural past and present combine in perfect synergy with an alpine and high alpine landscape of spectacular beauty.
