Andermatt/Sedrun

Three cantons, one ski area: You should be able to trust an Olympic champion: “The run down from the Gemsstock is my favourite piste, and one of the most beautiful in the Alps,” says Bernhard Russi.
Which is why it is called the Bernhard Russi Run. But this is certainly not the only reason why the Egyptian investor Samih Sawiris is building a luxury resort in Andermatt. Long ago he recognised the tremendous potential of the vast Gotthard Oberalp Arena, which extends over three cantons: from the Gemsstock and Nätschen (canton Uri) to the Goms (Valais) and over to Sedrun (Graubünden).

Freeriding and freestyle

Ah, the Gemsstock! Andermatt’s mighty mountain is a legend among freeriders, and its challenging powder- blanketed slopes have long attracted aficionados from far and wide. There is of course another reason: Andermatt lies in the middle of the Alps, and is quick and easy to reach from the whole of Switzerland. When conditions are good, the cable car runs more frequently, bringing ski tourers up to the summit from as early as 7.30am. The famous Veltliner Tour connects the ski regions of Sedrun and Andermatt. Like the rest of the Gotthard Oberalp Arena, it is a richly varied playground for snow sports enthusiasts, full of surprises.

Top tip

The g-Park at Gurschenalp, with its sensational jumps, kickers, rails and boxes, attracts top snowboarders and freestyle skiers. Now novices too have the perfect place to learn tricks, at the new beginners’ and teaching park.
