Lauterbrunnen

Frozen waterfalls: In the 19th century, no journey through Switzerland was complete without a trip to Lauterbrunnen: the famous Staubbach falls inspired Goethe to write his poem “Song of the Spirits over the Waters”. Now, every winter, the 72 waterfalls of this valley transform into icicles – and don’t sing so much as crack and crash!
Yet Lauterbrunnen retains its character as a quiet, pleasant resort, ideally located for making new discoveries every day in the contrasting Jungfrau Top Ski Region. From cross-country to alpine skiing and tobogganing: you can do it all from here.

Top tip

Snowshoe trekking: choose between guided day tours from village to village in the idyllic snowbound Lauterbrunnen valley, or a two-day tour up to a high alpine hut, including fondue dinner and overnight accommodation.

How to get there

Public Transport: International trains ( ECE, EC, IC) travel to Interlaken East. Then change trains to the Bernese-Oberland-Railway, which will bring you to Lauterbrunnen in just 20 minutes.
By car: Take the motorway to Interlaken. Take the Wilderswil exit to travel on good class roads to Lauterbrunnen. In winter most of the time there is no snow on the road, but winter tires are recommended.
